When the Encore GX arrives in early 2020, Buick will offer four premium SUVs across the three segments customers are shopping in most: small, compact and midsize. The Encore GX will be positioned between the smaller Encore and the larger Envision and Enclave models. It will offer new standard safety technologies* and its style and functionality will be just right for many of today’s buyers.

“As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC.

Today, almost 90 percent of U.S. Buick sales come from SUVs.

The Encore GX’s new standard safety and driver assistance features will include Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. It will also offer the Enclave’s innovative Rear Camera Mirror, which provides a wide, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving, and High Definition Surround Vision camera system.

Its spirited and efficient performance will be paired with a purposefully designed cargo space that’s almost 5 cubic feet larger than the Encore and about 3 cubic feet smaller than the Envision.

Product specifications and pricing will be announced when the Encore GX begins arriving at U.S. dealers.

2020 Buick Encore Preview In China

From: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1122400_2020-buick-encore-revealed-at-2019-shanghai-auto-show

Buick on Tuesday unveiled a redesigned Encore subcompact crossover SUV and a new Encore GX compact crossover at Auto Shanghai 2019.

Confusingly, the larger Encore GX is likely to be the model we see in the United States as the redesigned 2020 Encore, as this is the version spotted testing on local roads.

It’s also because the subcompact Encore shown in Shanghai is based on General Motors’ GEM platform designed for emerging markets. The platform is an evolution of the Gamma II design found in the outgoing Encore and so far has only been used in models sold in China.

The compact Encore GX meanwhile is thought to ride on GM’s next-generation modular design for unibody crossovers, known as VSS-S. The VSS-S is one of four modular platforms or “vehicle strategy sets” GM plans to use by 2025. The others include VSS-F for front-wheel-drive cars, VSS-R for rear-wheel-drive cars, and VSS-T for body-on-frame vehicles.

All Buick is willing to say is that the vehicles boast enhanced connectivity and efficiency than the outgoing Encore. A 9-speed automatic and continuously variable transmission have also been confirmed.

We should know more soon as Buick will introduce the U.S.-spec 2020 Encore later this year.

2020 Buick Encore Spy Shots

Buick’s pint-sized crossover, the Encore, is about to get a redesign and we’ve just spotted a prototype.

The prototype reveals that the redesigned Encore, just like the current generation, will be twinned with an Opel Mokka X to be sold overseas.

Opel’s redesigned Mokka X has already been spotted and is confirmed to go on sale in markets where the German brand operates in 2020. The redesigned Encore is expected in Buick showrooms late this year as a 2020 model.

With the popularity of the current Encore, which racked up 88,000 sales in the United States in 2017 and expected to have sold even better last year, Buick’s design team was always going to go with an evolutionary look for the new model, and that’s just what our spy shots suggest.

What isn’t so clear is what platform resides underneath. Opel is thought to be using the CMP small car platform of parent company PSA Group for the new Mokka X. It’s possible Buick will also use this platform under license or stick with a platform from the General Motors portfolio. A redesigned Chevrolet Trax related to the new Encore is also due for 2020.

The current Encore’s 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-4 is likely to carry over, and buyers should once again be able to choose between front- and all-wheel drive. We could see the current model’s 6-speed auto swapped out for a 9-speed unit in the new model, though.

Also look for the new Encore to build on the current model’s abilities with new connectivity options and electronic driver aids. We’ll also likely see Buick launch an upmarket Avenir version this time around. Like Buick’s other Avenir models, the Encore Avenir should boast extra chrome detailing on the outside and better materials and seats inside.

Rival subcompact crossovers include the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Toyota C-HR, and the aforementioned Chevy Trax.
