GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra announced during the company’s quarterly earnings conference call that Chevrolet will introduce a next-generation Bolt, continuing to deliver what customers have come to expect: great affordability, range and technology.

“Our customers love today’s Bolt. It has been delivering record sales and some of the highest customer satisfaction and loyalty scores in the industry,” said Barra. “It’s also an important source of conquest sales for the company and for Chevrolet.”

“We will keep the momentum going by delivering a new Bolt…and we will execute it more quickly compared to an all-new program with significantly lower engineering expense and capital investment by updating the vehicle with Ultium and Ultifi technologies and by applying our ‘winning with simplicity’ discipline.”

Drawing on various Ultium and Ultifi technological advancements will help GM bring this popular model back to market on an accelerated timeline. Timing and specific details about the next-generation Bolt will be announced at a later date. The Bolt is expected to join Chevrolet’s growing lineup of all-electric vehicles, three of which are launching this year —Silverado EV, Blazer EV and Equinox EV.

From its market introduction in 2017, the Chevrolet Bolt changed the game as the first long-range, mass-produced EV available to customers at a truly affordable price. Sales of Bolt EV and Bolt EUV through the first half of 2023 have been the strongest to date. Eighty percent of Bolt owners are staying loyal to Chevy and nearly 70 percent of buyers who are trading in a vehicle for Bolt are trading in a non-GM product.

Sneak Peek of Chevy Bolt EUV

Prototypes for a subcompact crossover closely related to the Chevrolet Bolt EV have been spotted.

The vehicle will be called the Bolt EUV, General Motors has confirmed, which may indicate GM’s desire to separate “Electric Utility Vehicles” from electric vehicles already on sale. GM has also confirmed the vehicle will be the first outside of Cadillac to feature the Super Cruise autonomous driver-assist feature.

The prototypes are heavily camouflaged but elements appear to match up with the current Bolt EV. We also know the Bolt EUV is essentially a twin under the skin with the Buick Velite 7 unveiled in June for the Chinese market, so there are likely to be similarities here as well.

The underpinnings are GM’s BEV2 dedicated EV platform that debuted in the Bolt EV, meaning the range should come close to matching the Bolt EV’s 259-mile EPA rating for 2020. The Bolt EV’s single electric motor at the front should also be common with the Bolt EUV, although the platform could potentially accommodate all-wheel drive as well.

Note, the BEV2 platform is a placeholder to serve GM until the automaker launches its new BEV3 platform which is capable of spawning EVs with 400 miles of range or more. Vehicles already confirmed for the BEV3 platform include the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC Hummer EV, both of which will be revealed in the coming months but aren’t due on sale until late 2021.

As for the Bolt EUV, it will hit dealers in the summer of 2021 as a 2022 model. An updated Bolt EV will go on sale in late 2020 as a 2021 model. Production of both models will be handled at GM’s Orion Township plant in Michigan.

Chevrolet has been slowly rolling out the Bolt EV to more states ever since the car’s introduction last December. Originally, the Bolt was supposed to go on sale in all 50 states as of September 2017, but General Motors has moved up its plans. GM representative Fred Ligouri confirmed recent reports that the Bolt EV will be released nationally in August. He also mentioned that cars will be delivered to an additional five states at the end of this month for a total of 21 states since the December launch.

For a car that has only been available in less than half of the United States, the Bolt EV has been selling pretty well, at least compared with Chevy’s other plug-in – the Volt hybrid. From January 2017 to May 2017, the Bolt EV has sold 5,950 units. The Volt, which is available everywhere, has sold 9,187 units in the same time frame. Expanding the Bolt EV’s availability will likely improve the car’s sales substantially.
