Diesel Chevy Cruze Expected 46 MPG Highway

Cruze Diesel will be the most fuel efficient non-hybrid on the market, Chevy says.

Today Chevrolet has announced the final piece of information regarding the upcoming diesel version of the Cruze compact sedan – that the car will be EPA rated at 46 mpg. According to Chevrolet, the rating will mean that the Cruze Turbo Diesel will be the most fuel efficient non-hybrid car on the market.

The Cruze Turbo Diesel utilizes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that generates 148 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque.
Power is funneled through a six-speed automatic transmission.

By contrast the new Cruze’s diesel competition, the VW Jetta TDI, is rated at 42 mpg highway and 30 mpg city.

It will be available in certain cities this spring and nationwide and in Canada in early fall.Equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, the latest addition to the Cruze powertrain family has an estimated range of 700 highway miles on one tank of diesel fuel based on the EPA highway estimate and the vehicle’s fuel tank capacity. That’s about 10 hours of highway driving.“We harnessed generations of diesel expertise to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market,” said Gary Altman, chief engineer, Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. “The Cruze Diesel is the best diesel passenger car out there. Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car.”

With a starting price of $25,695, including an $810 destination charge, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is a better value than a similarly equipped VW Jetta TDI automatic. Compared with Jetta, the Cruze Diesel offers standard equipment including the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-appointed seating, a longer five-year 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and a two-year maintenance plan.

Cruze Diesel also beats its rivals in performance with a segment-leading estimated 148 horsepower (110 kW) and estimated 258 lb-ft of torque (350 Nm), and can go 0-60 in about 8.6 seconds. Its advanced 2.0L turbo-diesel engine has an overboost feature capable of increasing torque to an estimated 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) for short bursts of stronger acceleration when needed, such as entering freeway traffic.

Cruze Diesel is powered by the cleanest diesel passenger car engine produced by General Motors. The vehicle generates 90 percent less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions when compared to previous-generation diesels. Chevrolet has sold more than 2 million Cruze models globally since it was launched in mid-2010. More than 33,000 of those were diesel powered.

Cruze wagon has potential for U.S. — but will it get here?

Any way you measure it, Chevrolet’s Cruze had a great year.

For 2011, U.S. sales totaled 231,732, and all sales came from one configuration: a four-door sedan.

Well, it turns out Chevy’s got an ace up its sleeve.

General Motors is putting the finishing touches on the Cruze wagon.

The rear portion of the wagon has been stretched several inches, and a tailgate with a sloping rear window has been added. The description is based on spy photos that have popped up on Web sites.

Once before GM chose to skip the U.S. market for a Cruze variant. The good-looking and very practical Cruze five-door hatchback is sold outside the United States. I know some U.S. dealers wanted the hatchback in the Cruze line, too.

But what about the wagon? Will the U.S. market be snubbed again? GM won’t say.

Today the only competitors offering small, affordable wagons here are Hyundai, with the Elantra Touring, and Volkswagen, with the Jetta Sport Wagon.

I see some opportunity here.

The Elantra Touring replacement will be introduced next month at the Chicago Auto Show, and the folks at Hyundai hint that the redesigned car might be marketed as a hatchback . The “Touring” name might be discarded.

As for the Sport Wagon, I would expect that a Cruze wagon could be priced a few thousand dollars below VW’s model.

It appears there’s space in the U.S. market for a Cruze wagon.

This seems like an opportunity for Chevrolet.
