WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM DEVELOPED ON KIA SOUL EV

Kia’s Popular and Iconic Five-Door Vehicle Used to Develop Fantastic New Technology

  • Wireless system unplugs the future of electric vehicles
  • Three-year development project successfully progressed from development to real-world performance
  • System can wirelessly charge cars with up to 85 percent efficiency, even when misaligned

SUPERIOR Twp., MI, April 10, 2018 – Marking an important step in the future of electric vehicles, the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) and Mojo Mobility, Inc. (Mojo) have completed a three-year project to develop a fast-charging wireless power transfer system on a test fleet of Kia Soul EVs1. The project, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, paves the way for the future of electric vehicles in which plugs are no longer necessary.

HATCI and Mojo, a wireless technology company, worked together to develop a compact wireless charging system that is capable of transferring more than 10 kW to the vehicle for fast charging while targeting an 85 percent grid-to-vehicle efficiency. The project installed the system on five Soul EVs and tested them in real-world applications for durability, safety and performance.

The system works by using an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two coils—a transmitter on the ground and a receiver on the bottom of the vehicle. The driver simply parks the car above the transmitter to begin charging and then energy is sent through an inductive coupling to an electrical device, which uses that energy to charge the electric vehicles’ battery. The system is so efficient it will allow some misalignment between the transmitter and the receiver, making it easier and more convenient for owner’s day-to-day use.

“We’re thrilled with the success of the system and its efficiency,” said William Freels, HATCI President. “We set out to develop wireless charging that has real world applications and is easy to use for the consumer. Now, with this fleet of wireless Soul EVs, we can clearly see a future of unplugged electric vehicles.”

There is no current plan to offer the wireless charging system on production vehicles for sale to consumers; however, the success of this development project suggests similar systems are possible on future Kia electric vehicles.

2018 ZR1 Chevrolet

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 is coming, and based on these new spy photos the biggest, baddest, and most aggressive road-car Chevrolet has ever built is nearly finished. We’ve seen spy photos for months now, with each new batch showing off more and more of the car. These new photos give us our best view yet.

Every test vehicle we’ve seen so far has been covered in camouflage. That’s still true here, but rather than loose fitting covers we have more revealing swirl wrap. For the first time, we can get a good look at the bulging hood and the reworked front end, complete with a massive, ankle gouging splitter. Chevrolet, no stranger to fantastic track-focused machines, seems to be filling the void left by the soon departed Dodge Viper ACR.

The big hood is likely hiding a supercharger larger than the 1.7-liter version found under the hood of the current Z06. Remember, the last generation ZR1 featured a 2.3-liter supercharger. We estimate the engine will be cranking out more than 700 horsepower and will breathe through those massive air intakes in the front bumper.

These new photos show a line of cars out on public roads. It seems Chevrolet is testing a few aero packages, so expect something similar to the Z07 Performance Package to be available on the new ZR1. The new car looks nearly finished, so get ready to see a final production version as soon as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

A Preview Of The 2017 Buick LaCrosse

2017 Buick LaCrosse Will Be Available At VanDevere In Akron Ohio

Buick’s new LaCrosse may not be a BMW-rivaling sports sedan, but it boasts remarkably lithe and polished manners on a curvy road. That’s partly due to its all-new structure, which checks in about 300 pounds lighter than last year’s admittedly porky model, and also to its upgraded five-link rear suspension that can be combined with two-mode adjustable dampers.

Unlike last year, all LaCrosses are now powered by the same 3.6-liter V-6 engine. This is Buick’s first application of GM’s new V-6, rated here at 310 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque, figures up 6 and 18 over last year’s version, respectively. The new V-6 is also mated to an 8-speed automatic—again marking the first time this transmission has been used in a vehicle to wear the automaker’s red, white, and blue shield.

Base LaCrosse models will sticker for $32,990, but selecting the two-mode dampers requires stepping up a couple of trim levels to the oddly named Essence trim level at $39,590 (plus an additional $1,625 for the dampers that are paired with 20-inch, as opposed to 19-inch, alloy wheels). The option doesn’t transform the LaCrosse into a Corvette, but what was already a confident-handling sedan with delightfully light steering feels even more poised when the road turns curvy.

Of course, a Buick can’t be a bad mile-eater, and to that end the LaCrosse succeeds as well. Its interior is Buick’s quietest yet, but what is most remarkable is that it makes use of ultra-light sound deadening. The LaCrosse weighs in at a svelte 3,600 pounds, but quells road rumble like a true heavyweight.

Most LaCrosse models will be front-wheel drive, but Buick offers the full-size sedan with optional all-wheel drive on the range-topping Premium trim level, which is a relative rarity in the full-size class.

LaCrosse squares off nicely against the Toyota Avalon and Lexus ES 350, offering style and sophistication more in line with the Lexus, but at a markedly lower price point. Our only complaints are lower-than-expected rear seat leg room for such a big sedan and the fact that adding automatic emergency braking requires piling on a number of options first.

Lots of features are standard on even the base model—a 7.0-inch infotainment screen, xenon headlamps, 19-inch alloy wheels, and power front seats. From there, the lineup jumps a hefty $4,000 to the LaCrosse Preferred that only adds a power-telescoping steering wheel, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a cargo net. It’s certainly a questionable value, so we’d advise either sticking with the base model or jumping to the $39,590 Essence that brings with it leather heated seats and a few other goodies—and offers optional navigation. The range-topping Premium is the only variant to offer automatic emergency braking, something that is either standard or available at a much lower price point on many rivals.

The 2017 LaCrosse is headed to showrooms shortly, where its $32,990 base price is up $1,000 from last year’s—but it feels worth every penny.
