Chevrolet SS Sedan Priced at $44,470

Chevy’s new performance sedan comes nearly loaded.

Chevrolet announced pricing for the upcoming Holden-derived SS Sedan. The rear-wheel drive, V-8 Australian car will wear a base price of $44,470 including a $995 destination charge to ship it to the U.S.

There is nothing ‘stripped’ about the SS – there’s only two options available on the car, a sunroof and spare tire. The lack of optional gear is the product of the SS having just about every modern amenity expected on today’s vehicle, standard. Chevrolet has gone so far as to make navigation system and automatic park assist standard on the new SS.

Part of that long list of standard features is GM’s well-known 6.2-liter LS3 V-8. In the SS the LS3 generates a healthy 415 horsepower and 415 foot-pounds of torque, identical to the former Pontiac G8 GXP, the car the SS spiritually succeeds. The only transmission option is a six-speed automatic. The Corvette’s Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual gearbox is offered in Australia, as it was on the G8 as well. It’s unclear why Chevy is not providing the manual option on the new SS, however we speculate it is an effort to keep options and complexity of this import product to a minimum.

Speaking of the G8 GXP, it wore a starting price of $39,995 back in 2009. Couple the SS’ longer feature list and factor in today’s dollars, the $44,470 price is not terribly shocking.

Several weeks ago it was revealed that Chevrolet was replacing the Spark’s four-speed automatic transmission in favor of a new continuously variable automatic. Today Chevy finally revealed EPA ratings of 30 mpg city and 39 mpg highway for the 2014 Spark, a two mile per gallon increase in both city and highway ratings over the 2013 model.

When the Spark launched last year, there was some criticism toward the car’s fuel economy ratings when paired with the automatic transmission. Amongst its competitors, the Spark was towards the bottom, with only the Fiat 500 having a lower average fuel economy rating. GM apparently took the criticism to heart by swapping the transmission out, or at least had the foresight of knowing that consumers would expect better fuel economy out of such a small car.

Regardless of the motivation, the increase in Spark’s automatic fuel economy means that the five-speed manual version of the car has only a very slight advantage with a 31 mpg city rating, sharing the same 39 mpg highway rating with the automatic.

For 2014 the Spark continues to be powered by a 1.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine that generates 84 horsepower and 83 foot-pounds of torque.

2014 Chevrolet Suburban Will Be Available at VanDevere Chevrolet in Akron Ohio

We recently drove the brand-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and found it to be vastly improved compared to the outgoing model. And now that The General’s pickup trucks have been squared away, it’s time to focus our attention onto their passenger-friendly companions, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (above).

Our spy photographers have passed along a huge smattering of photos (and a video), showing the new SUVs out testing. Both the short- and long-wheelbase models were spied, and while the overall shape of the vehicles hasn’t changed all that much, we expect the updates to be substantial. In addition to new powertrain options, like GM’s new small-block V8, we expect the interiors of both SUVs to get massive makeovers, providing better materials throughout their cabins and quieter, more refined environments. We even hear that some trick new suspension developments may be in store for upper-end models.

Visually, these spy shots allow us to see a couple of new details on the SUVs’ front and rear fascias, including LED running lamps on the Yukon and some interesting LED taillamp treatments. Of course, the obvious third party missing from this set of photos is the Cadillac Escalade, but as we reported earlier, GM is working to further differentiate the ‘Slade from the rest of the fullsize SUV lineup, and is working to make the new model “much less ostentatious.”
